We stand ready to serve, support, and guide with decades of experience and a deep respect for those who give so much.
Sharing a meal with veterans, their families, and friends is a powerful reminder of community and gratitude, captured in this moment of camaraderie and respect as hundreds gather to honor those who served.
Each year on Veterans Day, Michael B. Clayton & Associates proudly hosts a meaningful community tradition that brings together hundreds of local veterans and their families for a barbecue in their honor. This event has become a cornerstone of gratitude in Santa Maria, a day to reflect, remember, and recognize the bravery and sacrifices of our nation’s servicemen and women.
Organized by attorney Michael Clayton, a dedicated supporter of veterans, the barbecue is more than a meal. It is a symbol of lasting respect. With the help of over 200 local volunteers, thousands of plates are served to veterans from every generation, including those who served in World War II, Vietnam, the Gulf War, and beyond.
The festivities begin with a patriotic ceremony featuring performances from local schools and veteran organizations, followed by the recognition of distinguished guests and heroes from our community. The event is open to the public, with proceeds benefiting different groups each year that support veterans, such as Band of Brothers, a nonprofit focused on veterans’ mental health and well-being.
As Michael Clayton has said,
“They gave everything for their service. Some gave all, most gave a lot. I just don’t feel like they’re getting the recognition they deserve.”
This is our way of saying thank you, with sincerity, food, music, and community. Appreciation should never be silent.
Recently, I received a handwritten letter from a veteran who chose not to sign their name—not out of hesitation, but out of humility. In that letter, they spoke of the pain many veterans once endured when returning home, and of the simple dignity they feel today when their service is acknowledged.
Their words touched me more deeply than they could ever know.
For the past 25 years, it has been my honor—not my obligation—to host the annual Veterans Day barbecue. But the truth is, no meal, no handshake, no event could ever come close to repaying the debt we owe the brave men and women who have worn this nation’s uniform.
To the veteran who wrote that letter:
Thank you. Your words will stay with me for the rest of my life.
And to every veteran—from every branch, every era, every walk of life—please hear this clearly:
You are appreciated. You are remembered. You are valued.
Your courage, sacrifice, and service shaped the freedoms we live under today. Our community stands stronger because of you.
This message is not just from me, but from an entire community that salutes you with gratitude.
